My daughter is obsessed with My Little Pony, well horses in general, but the MLP obsession is definitely there.

So when it was time time to pick a costume last year, she wanted to be Rainbow Dash, of course. The first thing I did was see what was out there to buy. Making costumes is not my first go to-I would rather save the time if I can. The only one I saw was at Target. It was $35 and the felt tail pieces were just glued to the satin. I couldn’t buy it….it was too much for the poor quality soooo to the internet we went.
I couldn’t quite find what we wanted so we made up our own. I just wanted to throw another idea out there for those scoping out Rainbow Dash Costumes. Here you go internet!
I wish I would have taken more pictures to make this a DIY but I was just trying to get it done in time. Actually, I wish I would have taken more pictures, period. This was all I had from the season. She’s even missing part of her costume. What was I thinking? It’s not like I had a new baby or anything. haha
If you want to know how I made it keep scrolling.
Ears: I made a plush heart shape out of fleece. To make the shape of the ear I sewed up the v part of the heart. I then glued them onto a baby blue headband.
Mask: That is made of felt. I printed off picture of Rainbow Dash’s eyes and the cut out each part and then used that as a template to cut my felt. I then cut eye holes and tired to keep the eye holes within the black area so I wasn’t cutting into other parts of the eye.
Wings: I made the shape I wanted out of paper. I used fleece and sewed two parts together so that I would be able to stuff it with filling, like a pillow. I wanted it to be very cartoony. Once I stuffed the wings and closed them up, I sewed around the edge to give it that detail. I made 4 wings total. 2 smaller ones and 2 bigger ones. I sewed all 4 wings to a piece of fleece and then wrapped that fleece around a piece of cardboard to give it some stability. I sewed on some elastic so that she could wear them.
Shirt: I bought the shirt…it’s a basic long sleeve shirt.
Tail: I just cut felt in the shape I wanted and hot glued them together to create the tail. I attached it to elastic to go around her waist.
Skirt: Rainbow Dash Equestria Girl has a skirt, so we went with a skirt. I sewed a basic skirt with elastic. I printed off a large image of her cutie mark and cut it up for a pattern. I then cut the pieces out of felt and then sewed them on the skirt on both sides.
Feet: I’m super bummed that she doesn’t have them on but she had some awesome rainbow leg warmers. The Equestria Girl version has long rainbow socks and high tops.
This is the best picture of her hair I got. We used the color spray but I don’t recommend it! It was a nightmare to put in. It got super sticky and her hair was very tangly. I would try and brush it out. Let me just say, it was a lot of screaming. I had to do that process 3 different times. I wanted to go the chalk route but couldn’t find all the colors I wanted. So if I ever did this again I would get chalk.
For sure!
This year I’m making more Pony costumes. I told you there was an obsession! haha. Hailey wants to be Pinkie Pie but not just the regular Pinkie Pie, the Grand Galloping Gala Pinkie Pie. Don’t ask! And now little sister is going to be Twilight Sparkle. Wish me luck!

Super cute! One of my daughters wants to be Rainbow Dash this year, so I'll definitely be using this as inspiration. Thanks for sharing! I found you through Ginger Snap Crafts {wow me} wednesday.
Oh thanks Robyn! I'd love to see how it turns out>
Oh my goodness, this is absolutely adorable! My 3 year old daughter just saw this over my shoulder and said, "Look! That little girl is Rainbow Dash!" Haha
So cute! I miss those days of kids' costumes! I didn't even know who Rainbow Dash was, lol, but your daughter sure makes a pretty one! 🙂 ~Rhonda
Home made costumes are the best, the shop ones are so expensive and so poorly made half the time.
This is fab. I'm so sorry to hear that the hair was such a problem afterwards though – it looks great!
Haha awesome!
lol thanks! Honestly I wouldn't know much about if it wasn't for her obsession!
Thanks!
Really Cute! Great Job!
this is so adorable! your daughter is too cute!what a fun costume idea 😀
This is so cute. I know my daughter would've loved it when she was younger. She was a huge Rainbow Dash fan. Thanks so much for linking up to Thriving on Thursdays.

So I know I already commented, but I've decided this is just the best and am choosing it as the feature for the Thank Goodness It's Thursday party. Great, great job! I hope you'll stop by tomorrow (Ruffles and Rain Boots) and link up again. 🙂
Oh my gosh! Thanks!
aww thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks so much, Stacey!
Love this! My daughter is an MLP fan…and Dad is a Bronie. We've had our fair share of Rainbow Dash themed parties and presents. Your costume beats the socks off the one at Target! As Rainbow would say, "It's 20% more awesome!"
What an awesome costume! My best friend (who's a full grown adult) would absolutely want to dress up as Rainbow Dash! Pinned! Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday, hope to see you again Sunday night!
