I made these cute little pinatas for our Amazing Race party we just did. You’re getting a little sneak peek! Woohoo!
(You can actually see it here)

The girl we did the party for loved South America so that’s where we based our party. These pinatas were for one of the challenges. And let me tell you, they were a challenge to bust open. Haha
So to start off I got a bowl about this size, the size of my head, and drew a circle on poster board. As you can see, I’m a dork! I didn’t know how else to measure the bowl. 😉 I cut the circle in half so I had a semi-circle shape.
Curl it into a cone shape and then tape with masking tape. I bent it a little on the side to make it more of a chili shape and less of a snow cone shape. And can I add that not all masking tape is the same? I bought a bunch from the dollar store and it was awful! It would rip off in shreds! It wouldn’t even come off in one piece, and it wouldn’t stick!! I recommend 3M Masking Tape.
I took a little bit of newspaper and crumbled it to form a dome shape on top and then covered with tape. I also made a little stem out of cardboard. Then just tape the heck out of it.
Then we paper-mache!
And if you have never done that before, you start with laundry startch. I used Purex Sta-flo.
You pour some in a bowl and then dip ripped up pieces of newspaper in.
You just cover that sucker up! We’ve become quite the paper-mache artists. Not intentionally!
Now let it dry completely. It will probably take until the next day. Try to move it around so it doesn’t have a wet spot on the bottom from laying there.
I got some red and green tissue paper. I just covered it up using a glue stick. Yep, just glue it on! And it doesn’t have to be perfect!
Don’t forget to cut a hole and fill it. I recommend doing it before you start making it pretty-unlike I did here. If you are like me, just glue another layer of tissue paper on it after you fill it up. No biggie!
Now the fun part! I cut strips of tissue paper about 1-2 inches wide.
I cut some fringe.

Then I used a glue stick to just wrap it around. Just keep going until it’s covered.

Do the same with the green and you’ve got some cute little mini chili pepper pinatas! Perfect for Cinco De Mayo or a Latin American themed Amazing Race Party (Coming soon!)

Amazing Race Clue Boxes
Also, I also thought I’d share how we made our Amazing Race Boxes for the challenges.
Just grab a cereal/wheat thin box and tape up the top (which should be the open side, right? Or do you open your boxes for the bottom?) Use your awesome masking tape.
I measured out and drew out the shape I wanted to cut out for the lid on the unopened, untaped side. (which should be the actual bottom of the box. Have I confused you yet?)
Cut it and be careful to keep the unopened seams in tact.
I used black Spray Paint to make it look legit.

We just used yellow and red painter’s tape to make it look more like the show. You can get a pack here.

There you go, a super legit looking Amazing Race box!
